Fitflops: Can a shoe tone your butt?

Summer shoes have high expectations of your feet.
Open-toe slingbacks, sandals, wedge heels. Not to mention that you’re footing the bill for weekly pedicures just to stay presentable in them.
But what do you demand of your shoes? Not much, by the looks of yours... but shouldn't you? If you could request that your shoes make your legs leaner (and your ass for that matter). Wouldn't you?
Sound crazy? This summer tone your thighs, your calves and your glutes with Fitflop, the UK's hottest new fitness shoe. This unique line of flip-flops was dreamt up by a woman who specialises in coming up with things we just didn't know we needed. Marcia Kilgore is the former personal trainer who came up with the concept of Bliss the Mecca for spa hoppers on both sides of the Atlantic and then surpassed herself with her next project, the gloriously tabloidish "Soap and Glory" skincare range.
This time she went one step further (literally) and designed a shoe (rather a flip-flop) that exercises your legs while you walk. The FitFlops cleverly designed midsole creates an uneven walking surface which challenges core calf, thigh and butt muscles to maintain control while you walk - you are literally working out while strolling down the high street!
That’s more than I can say for the shoes in my closet.

Just a thought, but wouldn't an uneven surface on the shoe possibly lead to twisting an ankle? If that happened you would probably gain weight since you would have to be on your ass for a while :-)
I have a inflamed neurone in my foot which is caused by over strecthing in my calf muscles. I was told i need to improve the fitness in my calf in dramatic time. Would the shoes be suitable for medical as such?
IS there anyone that has these and can say that it really works????
Didn't they used to be called Dr. Scholls exercise sandals.
You don't feel the uneven walking surface so you're no more likely to twist your ankle than in any other shoes. They are very comfy--much more so than Dr. Scholls wooden sole-which I don't think exercised the foot--I think it tried to put the foot in proper alignment with arch and metatarsal support.
I took these shoes off after wearing them for the day and then walked up a flight of stairs....my legs felt like I had worked out. We'll see what kind of effect they have
Shocked by the response to these shoes; I've been trying to get my hands (or rather my feet) on a pair so that I can actually do a first-hand review.
I bought the fit flops through Bath and Body works website. I wear them at work wear I am on my feet all day and I love them. The only complaint I have is that the strap makes the top of my foot a little sore but I can deal with it. Love them so much I bought a second pair!!
But do they actually work your legs? Did anyone have any kind of indication that these shoes were doing something? Soreness in your legs or in your core? Or are they just very comfortable (which is reason enough to buy them) ... but more importantly their marketing is clearly stating that fitness is involved with wearing them? Is this true?
For some reason, walking on an uneven surface all day does not sound healthy to me. Would not this hurt your back also? Is this not the same as walking in a high heal type shoe with the spike as the shoe heal?
I have flat feet. Would these shoes be OK for me? Or would it affect my feet and knees?
From the description they don't sound much different then the old Dr Scholl's shoes from years ago.
Avon is selling a shoe very much like a FitFlop - except it's more of a sandal. They look awesome and supposedly does the same thing. It's a Curves product. (that circuit exercise class for women). I just ordered a pair, so I hope they don't sell out first!
I've always had trouble with the hard strip that goes between the toes. Is there a way to get used to this without rubbing blisters?
If they were called Dr. Scholl's, I don't remember for sure. But I do remember having those sandals that were supposed to exercise the legs, and I do remember feeling it in my calves a bit when I wore them. It was work to walk in them, but not uncomfortable. If these fitflops are reasonably priced, I wouldn't mind having a pair. I'm a flip-flop ho. I'm totally addicted to fun, attractive, comfortable flip-flops! If they sparkle, even better. And, if they can possibly make my rear look better, omg, even better yet! lol Who doesn't want to have a nicer looking tush? :o)
I definitely feel muscle fatigue after wearing the fitflops. I wore them to the mall today-did the full mile and a half circuit (plus the extra distance through a couple of stores--can't miss a shopping opportunity). We'll see how I feel tomorrow.
I BOUGHT TWO PAIR, AND A GIRL AT WORK THOUGHT THEY WERE SO CUTE, AND WENT AND BOUGHT A PAIR AFTER I EXPLAINED WHY I BOUGHT THEM. THE NEXT DAY, ALL THE WOMEN IN MY OFFICE ARE WEARING THEM. I HAVE WORN THEM CONTINUOUSLY SINCE THURSDAY, AND HAVE NOT HAD A BIT OF TROUBLE. I WORK IN THE YARD IN THEM, WEAR THEM TO DINNER, WORK, SHOPPING,ETC. THE BIG SURPRISE HERE, IS I HATE FLIP FLOPS. I ALWAYS WEAR MY TENNIS SHOES. I AM A CHANGED WOMAN! THE MATERIAL BETWEEN THE TOES IS SOFT, SO I DON`T GET BLISTERS, OR SORE. THEY AREN`T SLICK EITHER IF THEY GET WET. YOU STILL HAVE TRACTION ON THE BOTTOM, AND ON TOP. I SAW WHERE THEY WILL HAVE A BLUE PAIR COMING OUT IN MID JUNE...CAN`T WAIT TO GET THOSE TOO. WE GOT OURS AT BATH AND BODY. :)
I just bought a pair today and I LOVE THEM!!! I know it sounds too early to make that assertion, but I usually don't like flip flops ... for the same reason others have mentioned, which is that the piece between the toes usually bothers me. These are less like flip flops and more like an open athletic shoe. They are soooooooo comfortable. I wear a 9 1/2 and despite the website recommendation, I went down a size to a 9. The 9's fit nice and snug and I felt more like I was "working out" then in the 10's where I felt like I was concentrating on keeping the shoe on my foot. I don't think you can go wrong with these shoes!
"FLITFLOPS" SOUND VERY ATTRACTIVE -- I HAVEN'T HEARD OF THEM. BUT NOW I'M GOING TO MAKE SOME CALLS & EXPLORE THE NET LOOKING FOR THEM IN MY AREA.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH "CROCS" (OR FACSIMILE THEREOF):
I ADMIT TO BEING AN AVID "CROCKS" WEARER (BUT I BOUGHT THE CHEAPER COPY-CATS FOUND IN GIANT RETAIL STORES). I OWN 7 PAIRS -- MANY COLORS AND EVEN PATTERNS. I WOULD BUY MORE IF & WHEN I FIND THEM IN COLORS I STILL WANT.
IN LATER YEARS SHOES HAVE BEOME A LITERALLY PAINFUL PROBLEM FOR ME. I HAVE PROBLEM FEET -- SIZE 7W WITH NONDIABETIC NEUROPAHTY IN BOTH FEET AND THICK FUNGAL TONAILS. HAVE FOUND VERY FEW SHOES THAT I CAN TOLERATE.
THESE "CROCS" -- UNGLSAMOROUS,CLUNKY-LOOKING AND SUPER-CASUAL RUBBER-LIKE SCUFFS ARE SO INCREDIBLY COMFORTABLE THAT I WAS HOOKED THE MOMENT I SLIPPED MY FEET INTO THEM MAYBE A YEAR AGO AND BEFORE I'D EVEN HEARD OF THIS SHOE AND ITS POPULARITY.
THE PRICE WAS RIGHT (UNDER $10.OO!) - THEY'RE SO LIGHTWEIGHT -- THEY CLING COMFORTABLY TO MY FEET AND CAUSE ABSOLUTELY NO CHAFING OR BLISTERS -- NO SLIPPIING OR SHIFTING TO THROW ME OFF BALANCE -- THEY DON'T SLIP AND SLIDE ON THE WALKING SURFACE --AND MY FEET ARE WELL VENTILATED, SO NO PERSPIRATION OR ODOR. AND KEEPING THEM CLEAN IS ALMOST EFFORTLESS.
I'VE LIVED IN FLORIDA 50 YEARS AND NOW AT LAST ENJOY WEARING THESE "RAINPROOF" WONDERS ON MY BARE FEET --GETTING WET DOESN'T HURT THEM A BIT (NO SOLES OF EXPENSIVE LEATHER SHOES TO COME UNGLUED AND STAY SOGGY FOR DAYS --- AND NO FABRIC OF SNEAKERS AND SOCKS TO GET DIRTY AND SOAKING WET) AND,TO BOOT,. MY UNSIGHTLY FUNGAL TOENAILS ARE CONCEALED.
MY ONLY COCERN IS THAT THE SOLES OF MY "CROCS" ARE WEARING OUT QUICKLY -- THE FORWARD PART OF THE SOLES ARE BECOMING DANGEROUSLY THIN UNDER MY WEIGHT AND WITH FRICTION OF VARIOUS MOTIONS. IF I WORE THEM ONLY ON THICK GRASSY LAWNS, THERE SHOULD BE NO PROBEM --BUT NOTHING SHARP OR GRITTY. AND THAT'S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!
TO SUM UP, IF "FLITFLOPS" ARE EVERYTHING THEIR WEARERS SAY, I'LL BE AMAZED! HOW CAN A "FLIP FLOP"POSSIBLY HAVE THE MANY POSITIVE FEATURES OF A "CROCK" TYPE SHOE? I'LL BELIEVE IT WHEN I SEE AND WEAR THEM! THEY'D BETTER BE REALLY HEALTHFUL "WORKOUT" SHOES. AND WHAT DO THEY COST?
BARB
What about the men?
They cost $68.00 a pair. I'll wait for a cheaper knockoff thank you.
