Camping it up for your next outdoor adventure

f_13525.jpgDon’t deny it. You’re a prince (or a princess). And that means certain things simply have no place in your life. Cheap cigars. Cubic zirconias. Tents.

Enter: The Dave Ellis' Army Duck Canvas Tepee. It's mildew resistant, flame retardant and 15' tall by 12' in diameter. Made with 16 foot Montana wood poles and leather ties and grommets, you'll never confuse this little gem for a tent.

The best part: This Tepee has a sewn-in floor. A liner that allows proper air flow, while ensuring that nothing accidentally leaves or enters (without your permission).

Such luxury, of course, doesn’t come cheap. $2,200 gets you the Tepee. Campfire songs and ghost stories not included.

Enjoy the ride: Celebrate the art of motorcycling

Rifle.jpgBeretta has been crafting its S-series shotguns since the 1930s. This year's update is the SO10, a beautifully engraved over-under suitable for both hunting and competition. $115,000.

Guns and Votes: The right to own a gun is considered by many to be central to the American identity. This stems in part from the nation's frontier history, where guns were integral to America's westward expansion. The importance of guns also derives from the role of hunting in American culture, which remains popular as a sport in the country today.

This year the presidential candidates have largely avoided the issue of gun control. But because it may be an important issue to you, Portfolio magazine (Feb. 2008) gives us the lowdown on how their positions compare: Barack Obama: Supported a ban on semiautomatic weapons in Illinois. * Mitt Romney: Previously supported a federal ban on assault weapons. * Rudy Guiliani: Favors letting indivdual states set gun-control policy. * Dennis Kucinich: Favors licensing for gun ownership of any kind. * John Edwards: Favors most gun control. * Hillary Clinton: Favors most federal requirement for state-issued photo licenses for guns. * Fred Thompson: Supports some local bans on concealed weapons. * Ron Paul: Opposes all forms of gun control, including federal laws baning guns on planes.

Giant Swiss Army Knife

16999E.jpg
Just as you can't be too rich or too thin, you also can't have too many tools on your Swiss Army knife - but that was before I got sight of the new Giant Swiss Army knife (yes, it's real). Grotesque, if superbly engineered, the Giant features 85 devices in all. Basically it includes every blade that has ever been incorporated into Swiss Army knives as made by Wegner, one of the two firms that make them.

Even though each one is assembled by hand in Switzerland, it's not exactly going to win any awards for lightest (it weighs almost 3 pounds), smallest or most efficient tool ... but at $1,200 a pop, it will probably win you the title of "King Gadget Master".

But unload this mother into the plastic tray as you walk through security at JFK Airport and just see what happens.
